This is a difficult matter.

This is local government, not local dressing room. So Ek, your sources feelings are as good as anyone who has a vested interest.

I always thought Gretzky -- who has remained silent about the situation and also, at the same time not defending or promoting the league one bit - was shafted by the NHL.

If it is he who is holding something up.... then God Bless Him. He totally "took one for the team". when he was booted out.

But it is all irrelevant. Phoenix is staying. NHL will own it and lose money every year they do.

I really don't get it. So my understanding of it is, Jamison had until midnight Thursday to get the funds together, and if he didn't the deal was off with the lease. BUT Burnside says that a group is prepared to take over for him and try to negotiate a new deal with the council. Question is, how exactly are they going to get the cash when he's had like 3 years to do it and couldn't?

This is another great case of why it's a horrible idea in general to publicly fund big arena projects btw, but that's a different subject.

I would think that no matter how much money Gretzky is owed, it's peanuts compared to, you know, the risk of trying to make money in a garbage market for the next 30 years.

Didn't he only own a small percent of the team anyway, and was just the public face for promotional purposes?

Yes, but he was clearly shafted by the NHL and did not make a public scene about it. So I guess my point is 'all good things....'

What a shock! Jamison can't come up with the money because no one is ready to back him and see the cash go down the drain and the new city council looking to get out of the deal.

Meanwhile, back in Markham........

This is why the NHL should have moved them years ago instead of bankrolling them.

He's right though.

How this franchise is still in Phoenix is ridiculous.

Actually, no. This team SHOULD be counted out. It should have been counted out a long time ago. This is a failed franchise, in a horrible market, being kept afloat to avoid admitting failure.

Phoenix was a mistake.
A mistake that should be erased as soon as possible.

They've gotta move PHX tho.

Bring back the Nordiques to the East. Move the Jets West. Problem solved.

They aren't going to be able to save face and just move the Panthers tho. That team is going to go under eventually. Season tickets starting at $7 a game. What a joke.

And they're talking about an expansion. Why not start by fixing what doesn't currently works before creating more problems?

This league is weird.

If I were to look at this business as a possible stock purchase, I would look at the earnings (negative), the growth (negative), and the debt structure (they can't pay their bills and they are in arrears, owing millions to other parties).

So, they lose money and they owe money that they can't earn.

byebye. This is impossible to fix...(unless you call Obama, he's good at handouts! lol)
